There’s nothing I believe in more strongly than getting young people interested in science and engineering, for a better tomorrow, for all humankind. – Bill Nye
Hi, my name is Moira. I was always fascinated with how things work, that’s why I was drawn to engineering. With the recent breakthroughs in technology, engineering and science has never been more relevant to everyone. This is why I was I was inspired to create this blog to help spread the word that science, engineering and technology is interesting and inspiring for people of all ages. You do not need to wear pocket protectors and thick glasses to be a technical person (or to like science and technology )– unless you want to! My goal is to inspire people of all ages and nationalities (especially younger people) to investigate careers in science and engineering. It would also be great to have more people interested in learning more about science and engineering in general.
Since I am in the field of material science and engineering, I will be mostly discussing topics within this spectrum. I am also a female engineer so the social aspects of being the only “rose among the thorns” will also be touched on from time to time. Topics outside of engineering may also appear but I’ll try to stick to my career path rather than dwell on personal notes.
Many young people that I have come across have little desire to explore careers in science and engineering. Even more mind boggling (to me) is that many of them do not even believe that science is valid. It seems like most young people would rather be a reality TV star or an athlete than to explore a science-based career. I guess on some level, I can see why those career objectives may seem more glamorous. However, I believe that part of the reason why this is occurring is because many people do not relate with anyone that they want to be like in a science or math-based career. In addition, they do not have an understanding of what professionals in these careers actually do.
Engineering can be an interesting career path. You’ll just have to live curious in order to be inspired in any career you want to excel in. Remember that “smart” is the new “sexy”. You’ll never get bored when you get to create and initiate new technologies and innovations.
